Sanana a pop-up retreat

Sanana is a pop-up surfskate retreat focusing on beginners and intermediates of any age. Weâll spend one adventurous week in Sines close to Lisbon, finding our flow between surfskating, surfing and living our best coastal life.
*Surf Guiding: Completely optional but since our retreat is located in one of the best and least crowded surf areas in Portugal, we canât miss the chance to catch some waves together. As your local guides, weâll personally take you to the best spots, help you organise equipment rental and lessons, and ensure you experience the best waves Alentejo has to offer.
Weâre staying at Manas Coliving, a traditional Portuguese house with amazing sea view. We cannot wait to have a morning coffee with you on the terrace watching the sun rise above the port. Every room has their own individual vibe.
Svenja is a full-time traveler who has spent years exploring the world, often finding herself in the most random and exotic places. Sanana was born from the many unique experiences she gathered on her journey. Each destination and encounter providing inspiration for this retreat.
Her life philosophyâlistening to yourself and going with the flowâled her to discover her love for surf and skate in her late 20s.
As a certified vegan chef, Svenja is here to nourish both your body and soul during the retreat.
David is the founder of Surfskate Las Palmas and a passionate surfer who found his calling while studying in Melbourne, Australia. He left his law degree behind to pursue what truly makes him happyâcoding, surfing and building communities.
With a knack for teaching and bringing people together, David will be your main instructor, guiding you through every wave and skate session with expertise and enthusiasm.
Ines, the owner of Manas Coliving and a proud local from Sines, is an amazing surfer with deep knowledge of the local surf breaks and beaches.
With a passion for interior design, surfing, and DIY, Ines is an experienced host who brings a Swiss knife approach to her workâshe can do a bit of everything.
Her warm hospitality and local expertise will make your retreat experience truly special.
Thatâs no problem at all and very exciting! Weâre welcoming any level but specifically love to teach beginners. Taking a whole week to really focus on skating is the best way to learn and most importantly: Figure out if this might be your new favourite hobby :)
Not at all! Everyone is welcome!
By Bus
There is a direct bus connection from Lisbon to Sines several times a day, which is a very convenient way to get here. You can book your bus here.
By Car
In case you decide to rent a car at the airport, itâs a straightforward drive to Sines and the car will allow you to explore all the surrounding beaches and towns.
Prefer tanning over paddling for your life? We completely understand. Our main goal is that you have an amazing week, so if you donât feel like doing any of the activities: donât do it. This is your vacation and you decide what it should look like.
Yes, the itinerary leaves gaps to enjoy some free time every day. So you can just go with the flow and do whatever you feel like from reading on the terrace over a stroll through the village to beach hopping.
No, Sines is easily accessible by bus and our house is in the middle of the village so you can walk everywhere. Weâll organise transport to surf spots as best as we can. Nevertheless, having a car will enable you to explore all the surrounding beaches by yourself and give you more freedom.
We love having little dinner parties, so we decided to provide 2 home-cooked family dinners. The food will be vegan, and we can accommodate other dietary requirements if you let us know before. Additionally, weâll provide a small daily breakfast buffet with bread and spreads. Coffee and tea is included at any time of the day.
Sanana is not a surf camp so we donât include any lessons. However, our house happens to be located close to amazing surf spots, and we want to help you experience the usually uncrowded waves if you want to. Surf guiding means weâll help you organise rental and lessons, if youâre a beginner, or transport and rental for advanced surfers. Of course, surfing is always dependent on the weather and tides so we just need to go with the flow.
This part of the Portuguese coastline offers some of the most uncrowded surf spots in the country, with options for all levelsâfrom beginner to advancedâwithin a 30-minute drive from the house. As your local guides, weâll personally take you to the best spots and can organise lessons for any surf level.
The workshops are dedicated sessions where we focus on specific areas of surfskating, such as mastering snaps, practicing drop-ins, refining pumping techniques, and even surfskate maintenance. Each workshop will be adapted to the skill level of the group, ensuring that everyone, from beginners to more advanced riders, gains valuable skills and insights.
We have different booking options and pricing dependent on your budget and social battery. You can book all the rooms for yourself, together with a friend/partner or tell us youâre happy to share with another Sanana participant.
Weâre a very small pop-up retreat and not a big organisation, so we hope youâll understand we need a certain level of commitment when you book. You can cancel your booking with 100% refund until 3 months before the start of the retreat. After that, weâll unfortunately need to keep your deposit of 50%.
If you have a board that youâre comfortable with and would like to practice on, youâre more than welcome to bring it along! However, if you donât have a board, no worriesâweâll provide one for you to use during the retreat.
Rather than a normal surf/skate retreat, this is a unique week that will only happen once. David and Svenja both have full time jobs so this is our passion project to pour all our heart in. Buuut⊠letâs see what the future brings and if there will be some other pop-ups in different locations.
All of our rooms have shared bathrooms and all double beds can be twin beds . So bring your bestie/mum/dog.
Our most âwowâ room that allows you to enjoy the ocean views from the comfort of your own bed or your own balcony.

This warm double room with ocean views is perfect for those who prefer a bit more cosiness. Also, the mirror has perfect selfie lighting next to one of Inesâ old surfboards.
A soft, warm light floods this room and you can see a corner of the ocean from its window. It has a single bed and the perfect armchair for reading.
